Thank you for visiting the Lone Star Lake Bison Ranch's web
site. Our goal in providing this site is to keep our customers informed and
educated about the attributes of bison meat as well as special events,
discounts and happenings at the ranch. If we have not had
the opportunity to meet you and tell you about us, here's a brief summary of
how the Lone Star Lake Bison Ranch began.
As with most small businesses, our ranch started as a dream.
Owners Don and Terri were both raised in rural areas of Kansas and knew they
wanted their kids to be instilled with those same small-town values and sense
of community. In addition, a good friend had begun raising bison and Don became
convinced that it was a good idea. We started networking with other bison
producers, learning about herd management, health and nutritional benefits of
bison meat, and the market potential. In 1994, the opportunity to purchase land
in Southwest Douglas County became a reality. Soon after, we began acquiring
bison through private herds and the Kansas Buffalo Association's Auction.
In 1998, the wheels were set in motion to market and sell
bison meat. With the help of our processing plant, Santa Fe Trail Meats in
Overbrook, Kansas, the inspection and approval process was completed.
Don started selling the meat at the Lawrence Farmers' Market in 2000 and the
rest, as they say, is history.
Today, our herd grazes on the lush native grasses that are
indigenous to this area. Our philosophy to raise only
grass-fed animals, free of added hormones, growth stimulants and antibiotics is
largely due to the natural ability of bison to thrive on native grasses and our
commitment to raise them in an agriculturally sustainable environment conducive
to their natural habitat. These majestic animals are a
symbolism of our past, present and future and we are committed to preserving
their heritage and cultural influence.
The growth of our business is due in large part to the
wonderful people we have met who recognize the quality, value and health
benefits that come from eating bison meat. Our business is based on consumer
trust and loyalty and we will continue to earn that trust by producing only the
finest quality meat at an affordable price. The future of
the bison industry looks extremely bright due to consumer demand for
home-grown, locally-produced products. We are what we eat
and we encourage you to support your local growers and producers, whose small
farming operations are truly the backbone of our community.
